The Island

  1. Genetics were obviously a main point in the movie, because they would take people’s gene’s and then make a clone of them. If you think about it, it is an amazing idea. Like they said in the movie, you could cheat death. But when you think about it, all of those clones had lives and weren’t just vegetables like the general public thought. The fact that they were created just to be murdered was unethical. Especially after giving them a chance to live, and interact with others. And the false hope about going to the island was disturbing too. The whole idea that they had no idea why they were created, and that they were given false memories was all a little (a lot) messed up. I think that the whole theory is very interesting, and if it was real it would be amazing technology, but it is just not natural. And besides, if eventually we all had access to this kind of technology, the world would over populate because we’d be having more kids than there would be people dying. So yeah, it's pretty much really disturbing, and I hope it never happens.

  2. In the movie The Island they used many themes of genetics and bioethics. They cloned people so that they could use their body parts to save lives and cure deseases. This was possible because they could copy the cells and make a new person with the same cells. In doing so this would make each body part like the liver, heart, or brain the same incase they got injured. This procedure according to the movie costs tons of money. I'm sure today it would cost a lot too. Also this process is viewed by the people (public) in the movie as a bad process and un-ethical. I also agree with the point that it is wrong to do so because of the murder of the clones and because you shouldnt be able to cheat life.

  3. In The Island, people bought "insurance policies," which were really genetically created clones of the owners. When the owners would become sick or close to dying, the doctors in the institute would cut open the clone and remove the body part or organ. The body part would then be placed into the owner and he/she would be perfectly fine. This is because of genetics. Bioethics in this movie is that these clones are like real people, and biology has created them. But biology has created them for the bad, to be killed. Also, these clones were created to have no feelings and no thought about what is out there and if there is a real world. It is good for the rich people, but bad for the clones.

  4. I dont think we should clone people because where would the people go. We already dont have enough jobs for anybody in the world, so why would we add more people to the mix of things to populate the world even more. I think that it would be ok to clone certian body parts adn store them, so when some one needs a transplant they have the extra body parts on hand. I know that eventualy we will have the power to clone people, and if we do and some one gets the idea like Dr. Merrick did then we would not know what to do with all the extra people who are alive that are just waiting to die. They movie potrays the "Island" as the only paridise left on the world, when it was realy just killing them.

I think that the liver is a main part in cloneing some one because they used it as many examples in the movie. At the end of the movie when he was talking about how he was saving peoples live, he was also killing pepole too. When he was killing all of the defected clones he reminded me as hittler, killing people in the gass chambers.

  5. I thought the movie was extremly interesting! It made me think...Can we really clone people? Do you really have the technology? Can this really be a multi-billion dollar corporation? This movie was said it the setting was in 2019? Is it possible we could be doing such amazing cloning work then? One of my favorite science parts was when all the clones were growing in the water bubbles and you could see all the tissue and cells and you could see some membranes! It was crazy how the clones had the orginal person's memories! I mean I am really biased on the bioethics of the situation, but think of it, if you were sick and you needed a liver or something, your clone could give you your exsact healty liver! But would you want them treated like that? The company treats them like products and when there was a recall they were just setting up mass lottery winnings. Which was pretty much genocide, at the end of the movie, when they were killing people in the gas chambers it reminded me if the Holocaust! How terrible you think people would learn their lesson on genocide and how itn is wrong, but it would still be happenng in 2019... Then when the African American worker who was trying to kill them, saw Jordan2delta with a marking meaning she was a clone, he felt emotional because he also had a marking that made him feel unhuman. But this technology really amazes me and the science. Maybe if they just cloned the organs and not the whole human it would be different.

  6. Using clones to harvest organs would save many lives, but aren’t the clones humans? They have the exact genetic code as the original human, they breathe, feel, and live; so according to the constitution they are humans, they have the same rights. Technically the property of the original would also be the property of the clone since they are the same person. The clone would have the rights to everything the original has and since they have the same genetic information the clone will probable get the same genetic diseases. Therefore the harvesting of their organs would be useful but they would have a limited time they would get the same disease, and the original would be back where they started needing organs. They don’t last as long either, they die younger. Humans don’t need to live forever the life spans we have are great and if you want to live longer you take care of yourself. Using clones would help stop people from dying but what about the clone it has feelings and emotions, did it ever have the option to say no? It didn’t it was created on the command of one person who is selfish and heartless. They are going to create this life and easier than they made it take it away. They will kill the clone for their own personal greed, its manslaughter. Even if you lock a clone up, keep it away from people and the world. They will still have emotions; they will still know they are being killed for some person who cares only about themselves. When immigrants came to America originally the American dream was to have a house with a white picket fence, a dog, and 2.7 kids. To achieve that dream they thought only of themselves, clones are no different. They built their house with the white picket fence, by taking the land from the Natives. Now they are taking away the rights of a human clone by killing them to harvest their organs, did the clones consent to this? NO! They were made by a lab, they are “property”. Slavery ended in the 1800’s cloning is like slavery, the clone is your slave.

  8. Bioethics is a very controversial subject. In my opinion, I believe that a human life should not be experimented with. For example, in the movie, scientists were cloning people so they could use their organs when the original person’s organs wore out. We are not meant to live forever. There is a reason we live as long as we do and why everyone is different. When we start to mess with the life of a human being, a lot can go wrong. This is why in the movie things go wrong and the clones find out that they would be killed and their organs would be used in another persons body to help them live longer. But why should someone be killed to help another person live longer? Why is that person's life more important than the other's when they are identical? Sometimes people just don't step back and look at the big picture.

  9. In the movie, The Island, there are many examples of bioethics and doing what’s right or wrong. The doctor tries to play God by creating clones for rich people. These people think that their clones are in a vegetative state, and they don’t have feelings or friends or anything. However, when the people at the Institute tried keeping the “products” like vegetables, they found that the organs in these people failed without everyday life and contact with other people. So they lied to the sponsors and kept the clones like ants in a colony. They kept these people going with a false hope of going to the only place left after a phony contamination, otherwise known as the Island. The people at the Institute implanted fake memories into the clones so that they believed that they used to be people in the real world. Then, when the sponsor needed something from the clone, the people at the Institute would tell the clone that they won the “Lottery” to go the Island. Instead, they would be harvested for their organs and such.
In my opinion, people shouldn’t try to be God, first of all. Second, if they do create these people, money can’t buy a life. People are meant to die at some point. You can’t cheat death. Ultimately, these people that think they can live forever will die in the end. Treating the clones the way they did was terrible. Keeping them going with a false hope was cruel. Making them do the same thing every day and controlling everything they did takes away from their humanity. Science or not, what the Institute was created for is completely unethical. The only good thing was that the movie took place in 2019, which means we don’t have to worry about 2012 (lol). The events in the movie (Institute wise) may have been unethical, but the storyline was great. It was a great movie.

  10. The movie, The Island, was centered on how cloning has its positives and negatives. It was a positive concept for the rich people because they could live longer by getting parts from their clones. It sounded like a fantastic idea, until I realized that their clones had developed feelings and were actual people. I think that in the movie, cloning was wrong and if the humans knew what was happening in these cloning institutes, they would think it was wrong too. The fact that the clones had established unique personality traits for themselves and that they had feelings makes killing them for their body parts like killing regular humans. So the clones were basically born to die. I also think cloning is wrong because it is not a natural process and can contain defects. Life shouldn’t be messed with in that way. Cloning goes against nature and sounds wrong to me. The movie also portrayed cloning as a bad idea because of what happened to Lincoln and Jordan.

  11. I don’t think that cloning should happen because, like in the movie, people could escape and not have a clue what is going on. Then social security will have a problem and the clone would go kill the real person. That would be terrible. Also, one little mistake could happen and one person could go ape on other people. They can escape and go attack people out in the real world. In the movie, the people were able to escape and get back in the place and shut things down. It wouldn’t be that hard to leave without workers catching you. The owner said that these people had the mind of a 15 year old. Things happen for a reason and I don’t think you should change the whole living experience. That’s would be bad. I think cloning is not cool.
