Living vs. Nonliving

Discuss as many characteristics that you can think of that you look for to determine if something is alive.

  1. If something is living, then in some cases it could move, or breath. If it's a plant, then if it needs water to survive (if it wilts without water) it is alive.

  2. When I think of if something is living I think about if it needs water, sun, or food to live. Also I begin to think if it needs to breath.

  3. I would look to see if they are breathing or if its eyes are blinking. I would also look to see if they are twitching or moving in some sort. For plants, I would look to see if it is shriveled up and the if plant is sagging.

  4. I think that if something is alive, it has to have either animal or plant cells that reproduce at a certain rate. Living things usually breath some element in and give off another. They usually move, grow, or reproduce. They need to eat, or if they don't, then they would use photosynthesis. If it is not living, it does not have cells that reproduce themselves and it does not move, breath, eat, or grow.

  5. When a thing is living it needs water, food, oxygen, shelter, it reproduces, and moves. When something is not alive it doesn't need those things to survive. It doesn't survive, therefore it is not alive. Even the smallest organisms are alive beacause their lives are governed by the need for food, water, oxygen shelter, and reproduction. Even fish need oxygen to survive, everything is governed by the simple will to live.

  7. It needs to move, dance, eat, drink, needs oxygen, it needs to be warm, sheltered, have food and water, it can be a simple alge or a human, or a lizard or anything thats an organism! If its a human it has to fistpump. But truley all living things need water and food. In 6th grade we did a lot of nonliving vs. living activites

  8. If something is alive, it needs water and food. If you see that it moves, breathes, reproduces, eats, drinks and needs shelter, then it is probably alive. A living organism needs to also have some kind of shelter to protect itself from weather and predators.

  9. If it is alive it has to have a heart beet, or is breathing. If you hear the subject muttering words or sounds it is still alive. If it is twiching there is a problly still alive. If the thing you are looking at to find is alive is not somethintg that can breath or has a heart like a plant then you should check its roots to see if they are some what moist tehn the plant is problly alive.

  10. To check if something is alive, I would check for a pulse, hear them breathing, or able to move. If it is a plant, it should smell pretty and not look brown if it is supposed to look pink or blue.
